If there’s a definition of exclusivity, Sanctuary Lodge is it. Truly one of a kind - and we mean this literally - it’s the only hotel located at the entrance of Machu Picchu and serves unparalleled views of the mythical citadel’s surroundings. The lodge hasn’t sacrificed location for luxury or first-class amenities either and it really is a sanctuary with its sprawling gardens, unbelievable cuisine, an indulging spa and overall amazing service. Just imagine staying at the only lodge where you can experience Machu Picchu at both sunrise and sunset, and watch as it disappears into the night, Pisco sour in hand...
From $790 person/night
It’s pretty obvious but we’ll say it anyway: Machu Picchu is RIGHT THERE and you get to be among the first through the gates as they open. Simply fall out of bed and you’re in...
Although first light over Machu Picchu is magical, mornings can be foggy (it is a cloud forest after all) but staying at Sanctuary allows you to go back during the afternoon golden hour, when most visitors leave to catch the last buses. Take advantage!
Hotel staff will meet you at Aguas Calientes train station and take care of your luggage, but all guests have to go up the mountain the same way as everyone else: aboard local buses, up the winding road. But you know, luxury always comes with a bit of sacrifice, right?
Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is a luxurious hideaway tucked into the mountain with stylish but earthy décor, including beautiful textiles and exposed stonework. Edged with greenery and featuring an orchid garden, the lodge teems with hummingbirds and butterflies - and with mesmerising views of Huayna Picchu mountain, the lovely outdoor courtyard is fantastic for chilling, as is the spa with its open-air treatment areas. The food is innovative and delicious, as are the cocktails; it’s a good thing standard reservations are full-board.
All 32 rooms and suites offer views of the seemingly endless mountains surrounding the Inca citadel. Interiors feature cool fabrics combined with dark woods, and all rooms have plush King-sized or twin beds, a satellite TV, minibar and marble bathrooms with standing showers. Some superior and deluxe rooms have private terraces too - the perfect spot for a nightcap or muña tea. Because of the location rooms aren’t huge, except the one-bedroom suite with separate living area and enormous private terrace.
As you’d expect, the lodge offers many activities related to exploring Machu Picchu in the best way possible. And rest assured, the guides are utterly fantastic. If you're looking to delve deeper into the culture, payments to the earth, coca leaf readings and vow renewals are also available with the guidance of a shaman. The spa is absolute heaven (massage with a side of Huayna Picchu views? Yes please!), or simply pause and take time to soak it all in - staying here is an experience that deserves to be savoured, after all.
