Of all the beachfront hotels in Cape Town, the Last Word Long Beach is possibly the only one that opens directly onto powdery white sand. The sand in question is Long Beach, an eight-kilometre stretch of shimmering shingle in the sleepy village of Kommetjie, framed by the jagged turrets of Chapman’s Peak in the distance. The hotel is a white-washed sanctuary and a lovely place to relax, soak up the sun, and watch the bleach-haired surfer dudes take on the waves. Need some action? It’s an hour's drive to the city, 20 minutes to the penguins of Boulders Beach, and a short distance to nearby Noordhoek's restaurants.

Kommetjie, Cape Town, South Africa
The chilled-out, beach living vibe, from the light and bright interiors to the splendid views from each private terrace.
Nearby restaurant, The Foodbarn in Noordhoek Village, is one of the best in Cape Town (in our humble opinion) and well worth booking in to for lunch or (and!) dinner.
Kommetjie and the surrounding area isn’t particularly "touristy" and the hotel feels a tad isolated. You’ll definitely need a car to get there.
Once the private home of the owner, the hotel feels intimate and cosy in all the right ways. The main living and dining area is furnished almost entirely in soothing tones of white and cream, making you feel relaxed as soon as you walk in the door. Breakfast is served on the sun-drenched balcony, accompanied by splendid views of the sea. There’s no restaurant as such, but staff will happily whip up some home-cooked fare with a bit of notice.
There are only six rooms in the hotel, and all are as tranquil and calming as the main area. Inside, you’ll find minibars, air-con and separate lounge areas, and the enormous bathrooms come complete with fluffy robes and fancy toiletries. The four downstairs rooms open out onto small, private terraces, and the garden and swimming pool, but top marks go to the two upstairs suites – vast, bright and breezy, the views from up here are phenomenal.
When you’ve had your fix of long, ambling beach walks and lazing by the pool, venture out to nearby Noordhoek and taste-test some of the top-notch eateries. You’ll also find a couple of horse-riding schools in the village if you fancy exploring the beach with a four-legged friend. In the opposite direction, Simon's Town and the penguins of Boulders Beach are a 15-minute drive away, or head over the mountains to the elegant Constantia vineyards for an afternoon of wine-tasting.
The service was high-end. The staff was kind and helpful. We returned from our shark cage diving experience and missed lunch. The staff made us a wonderful spread of cheeses and meats to tie us over until dinner. The views from out suite were incredible!
Never stayed there as their reservations department booked us elsewhere, although we had voucher and directions to find it. Extremely badly run department.
