One half of a sprawling resort on the northwestern tip of Zanzibar, Diamonds Star of the East is the place to stay for some barefoot beach action, accommodation that's the stuff of brochures, and a serious approach to leisure – yours. Come here to max out on the sand, sun and high-end hospitality. You'll have your own private villa with your own outdoor lounge and pool, indoor Jacuzzi, and access to a personal butler around the clock. Here all-inclusive really means it: including food and drinks and access to all the on-site facilities, and appealingly laid-back, island-style service.
From $790 person/night
The villas are positively palatial in both space and decor – and if you have trouble leaving yours, there's 24-hour in-room dining and private butler service. How's that for luxurious?!
The food is good, though mainly Western in style. If you're looking for something local, ask at reception and the chef will happily oblige...
Nungwi beach, where the resort is located, is postcard-perfect and as a result, can get very busy in the high season.
Ocean Blue Restaurant is an enormous open-sided, double-storey structure perched above the resort. Somewhat spaceship-like in appearance, it offers good meals and excellent ocean views. The grounds explode with bougainvillea and well-maintained greenery, the neat lawns dotted with thatched umbrellas, plenty of draped sunloungers, and a couple of crystal-clear, shell-shaped pools. Scattered along the beach are several open-sided tents and sunloungers, where staff are happy to serve you all day. The spa is superb, with a first-class yoga teacher.
The 11 palatial villas feel like islands in themselves. Deliciously private, each features large arched windows, a spacious patio with pool, an outdoor lounge, and ocean views. The airy interiors have cool wooden floors, huge four-poster beds, a daybed lounger, writing desk, and all the mod cons, including a Jacuzzi bath. Two suites have an extra bedroom, for two. Expect the best, even if you're not accustomed to being waited on hand and foot by your duo of private butlers.
Other than maxing out on sunbathing and all-inclusive meals, served in the leisurely, island-time way, Diamond Star offers plenty to do. Practise yoga (with a class or privately), try aquatic aerobics, book a massage. The ocean, of course, has plenty to offer: excursions on catamarans and dhows, windsurfing, waterskiing, wake-boarding, fishing, and diving some of the spectacular reefs. Book activities at the dive centre. Intriguing Stone Town, with its many cultural and historic delights, lies 90 minutes away by road.
In the gin-clear ocean around Zanzibar, marvel at bright corals with over 450 species of tropical fish, octopus, stingrays, moray eels, green turtles, hawksbill turtles, dolphins, humpback whales, and if you are very lucky: whales sharks and manta rays. In the coastal forests, spot the colobus and Sykes monkeys, bush babies, more than 50 species of butterfly, as well as brilliant bird species.
