A Nairobi stay needn’t be an urban hotel experience. Owner-run Macushla House offers a quiet oasis about 18 kilometres from central Nairobi in the suburb of Karen. Breakfasts are delicious, the staff are friendly, they have great local knowledge and are happy to help with ordering taxis and arranging tours. The whole vibe is unpretentious and relaxed, and when it comes to the garden and the cool stone veranda – well, you could spend hours there enjoying a cup of tea, or a glass of wine in the company of monkeys and exotic birds.
From $120 person/night
The quiet location. Tucked away in the leafy green suburb of Karen, you're far from the crowds and bustle.
Stay two nights and ease into the Nairobi way of life; this will give you a relaxing day to explore the city at your own pace.
You're on the quieter edge of the city (great) but access to some of the city centre hotspots may take longer (not so great).
The house was built in the '70s and its whole aesthetic has something timeless about it. It's trendy in an unpretentious way, so you can really feel at home here. The swimming pool is tiled in a chequered black and white and is surrounded by a beautifully maintained garden. We love the stone veranda and cane furniture, and the African curios in the colonial dining room. There’s a 24-hour bar and a poolside snack menu. Sounds like a holiday, right?
The six rooms are spacious and comfortable, with design details that are a throwback to another era: the bay windows, the high-backed cane chairs, wide kelims and floor-to-ceiling shuttered wooden cupboards. All the beds are netted and the rooms have modern, tiled en-suite bathrooms. The interiors are cool, with the right amount of light and quiet – except for the vervets in the morning. But hey, this is Africa.
Most travellers stay at Macushla en route to the Masai Mara. The guesthouse is well located for local sightseeing too, as it's just a short walk or taxi drive from local tourist attractions such as the giraffe sanctuary and the David Sheldrick Elephant Nursery. Out of Africa fans can head to the Karen Blixen Museum. The original home of the writer, who was known by her pen name, Isak Dinesen, the house played a starring role in the Oscar-winning film.
Show all wildlife
A land of stark contrast, where a rolling wilderness meets the rising buildings of a growing city, proving that harmony can be achieved in a modern world. Explore and discover a diverse range of wildlife in the Nairobi National Park; species like zebra, warthog, giraffe, buffalo and lion are in abundance with Black rhino sightings almost a given. There are leopard and cheetah, but these shy creatures can be a little more difficult to spot. This birdlife does not disappoint either with more than 400 species present in the region.
