Having made its grand entrance in May 2024, Natural Selection's latest gem is set amongst a gathering of ebony and sausage trees in the south-east Moremi Game Reserve of the Okavango Delta. The camp was created alongside the paramount chief of the Batwana tribe (after whom it's named), whose forebears were instrumental in the conservation of the wild areas that would one day become Moremi. The design of Tawana is striking, from its arched entrance inspired by fishing nets to the chic, palatial suites that occupy three thatched areas. Add to that the impressive numbers of lion on the plains surrounding the camp, and you've got an all-round excellent safari.
From $1,880 person/night
The design of Tawana is fresh and beautiful, making for an idyllic space to enjoy in between game drives.
Certain rooms are a good 7 to 8 minute walk away from the main area. If you're not up for it, be sure to request a closer room.
There are no water activities available at Tawana as the hippo population is too great – you won't be complaining though when the sightings are so epic.
The main area is absolutely lovely and very spacious with a breezy lounge, bar, indoor and outdoor dining areas and a library filled with books about the history of Moremi and its people. The communal spaces are splashed with sky-blue hues and decor woven by a group of local women. The camp also has unique touches like a walk-in wine cellar and wood-fired pizza oven, as well as an intimate spa area with a menu of delightful treatments. Evenings are spent around the enclosed firepit as hippos call into the night.
Reached via winding raised walkways, there are 8 suites including 2 family rooms that reach a whopping 130 square metres in size. Their style draws inspiration from the organic tones of the landscape and traditional Batawana patterns. They each boast a separate lounge, king-sized bed (cooled by an aircon and ceiling fan) and spacious bathroom with a large tub, shower and 'exercise basket'. Enjoy uninterrupted views of the Gomoti River from the private terrace, outdoor sala or plunge pool – dreamy or what?
The area surrounding Tawana has some of the highest wildlife numbers in Moremi Game Reserve, which you'll experience on epic game drives. You can expect to see an abundance of predators including lion, leopard and wild dog. Many of their guides have grown up in the region and know it like the back of their hand. When you're not on safari, enjoy a dip in the 16-metre lap pool as elephant and giraffe come to visit. Scenic helicopter flights are also available at an additional cost.
Tawana Camp is owned by Natural Selection which is dedicated to conservation, partnering with local communities, governments, and organizations to protect and expand conservation areas. They build eco-friendly camps that blend into the environment and aim to inform guests about Africa's wildlife challenges and successes, hoping to inspire further positive action for wildlife conservation.
A contribution of $50 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
