A meandering dirt road lined with tropical palms and blushing bougainvilleas takes you to the understated entrance of Zi Villa, a unique, private abode on the North East coast of Zanzibar. Opposite the famous Mnemba Island and overlooking a small local beach called Fisherman's Cove, this side of the island is more secluded and free from large crowds. With the Indian Ocean on your doorstep, this Villa is the perfect place for warm seas, beautiful beaches and good diving, as well as being particularly well-suited to independent travellers who like to be a little more self-sufficient on holiday.
From $180 person/night
Zi Villa's seclusion from other resorts makes you feel like you are on your own private island holiday, away from the masses.
The magnificent position of the house perched atop a coral rock face makes for superb ocean views and wonderful lazy days around the pool.
A mini-bus driver who knows the lie of the land is available for hire at a daily rate; a great option for a potential spice tour, souvenir shopping or to explore some restaurants nearby.
The Villa's huge lounge is furnished with large sofas, rich wooden flooring and soft draped curtains. From here, you can quickly escape through large glass doors onto a sweeping pool deck, surrounded by twisting palms and overlooking the beach. Decor is interesting (read: slightly eccentric) and a TV/music system and library are provided. Meals, provided by the Villa's two resident chefs, can be relished outdoors on the deck, or indoors in the spacious lounge area.
Up to 14 guests can be accommodated across four en-suite rooms (this includes some suites with two queen beds, sofa couches, or bunk beds). Spacious, and masterfully bedecked with traditional artifacts, Persian carpets and wooden four-poster beds, each room has air conditioning, a mosquito net and a ceiling fan. The upstairs master suite has expansive views over the ocean, while most of the downstairs rooms open up onto the wooden deck at the pool. Two of the suites have private bathrooms, while the others share common or adjoining bathrooms.
It isn't called Fishermans Cove for nothing! Expect to share the beach with local fishermen and the occasional guests from the nearby hotel.

With a dive centre close by, there's plenty of opportunity to explore Mnemba Island reef and surrounds, whether its scuba diving or snorkelling you'd prefer. Onsite there are paddle skis, canoes and snorkelling equipment to explore the waters around the Villa, but be sure to wait for the right tides. If you've had enough warm-water wallowing and beach-bronzing, a mini-bus driver is available to take you to restaurants in the north, spice tours in the south or shopping in town.
In the gin-clear ocean around Zanzibar, marvel at bright corals with over 450 species of tropical fish, octopus, stingrays, moray eels, green turtles, hawksbill turtles, dolphins, humpback whales, and if you are very lucky: whales sharks and manta rays. In the coastal forests, spot the colobus and Sykes monkeys, bush babies, more than 50 species of butterfly, as well as brilliant bird species.
