Set in pretty, tropical gardens, The Marriott is a picture of sophistication yet also pays homage to the traditions of Costa Rica's Central Valley. There are social spaces to suit all tastes, whether you'd prefer to be pampered at the spa, chat with fellow travellers, or take in a game of golf or tennis. Coffee is the name of the game in this region of Costa Rica, and in the hotel, it finds its way into body scrubs and wall prints - not to mention a tour (and taste) of the famous Britt's Coffee. The hotel offers ample opportunities to explore the valley's beauty spots, but laying out on a lounger by the pool isn't a bad idea either.
From $90 person/night
From thorough pamperings, thrilling explorations, or some quiet time in between Costa Rican excursions, the Marriot ticks quite a few boxes.
If you're celebrating a special occasion, reserving La Isabela's private dining room is a real treat for dinner with a twist...
The hotel is very family-friendly with a separate kid's pool and available connecting rooms, but the activities aren't particularly children-centred.
The hotel's design has all the signature details of a hacienda, with beamed ceilings, wide archways and terracotta floors. The Great Room is a cosy place for curling up with a book (or making use of the Wi-Fi), while Bar 10 has a casual atmosphere and light, local dishes. In the evenings, La Castilla is the place to go for cocktails and views of the light-dotted Central Valley. When you're feeling peckish, the Hacienda Kitchen serves an authentic Costa Rican menu and the Casa del Cafe offers a sunny spot to enjoy a cup of the good stuff.
The rooms are all similarly decorated with large coffee berry prints, pillowtop beds and modern yet distinctive furnishings. The suites are extra spacious with an added living area, while certain rooms have direct access to the pool or Executive Lounge. All bathrooms are well-appointed with rainfall showers and wide mirrors - and the Presidential Suite has an enormous bathtub too. The most high-end suites feature a private dining area and patio, and standard rooms have a Juliet balcony - but all have views of the mountains or valley.
The hotel is surrounded by high-rise peaks, forests and coffee plantations - and they're all worth exploring. Take a tour of the Britt's Coffee fields, learning how they make their signature brew, and for real adventure, head to Poas Volcano National Park to hike into the forested foothills and spot fiery-throated hummingbirds and shy quetzals. Otherwise, visit the Braulio Carrillo Park for ziplining and aerial tram rides, and walk through the beautiful butterfly and orchid gardens. At the hotel, book into the spa, and laze in the outdoor Jacuzzi overlooking the coffee fields.
