This back-to-basics camp relies on skilled and passionate guides and warm Zimbabwean hospitality, rather than hotel luxuries and chic decor. Rhino Safari Camp offers an intimate, rustic experience on the edge of Lake Kariba, within Matusadona National Park. It is defined by unique geography - when water levels are low, the island links to the mainland via a narrow bridge of land which enables the free-flow of game to and fro; when levels are high it’s cut off by a narrow channel. This is one of the more remote and basic options around (no electricity, folks) that seeks to reward the brave with a more personalized, truly authentic safari experience - something of an endangered species these days.
From $90 person/night
Set within a black rhino sanctuary, this camp offers one of the most rare and sought-after experiences around - tracking these prehistoric animals on foot.
Cruise the enormous - practically oceanic - and picturesque Lake Kariba on a motor boat. You'll explore its inlets and channels and enjoy a smooth vessel from which to photograph its attendant wildlife.
Take a rod and a line and a cooler full of drinks and spend an afternoon trying to catch a tiger.
The heart of camp is the double-storey wood and thatch boma. The sand-floor lower level is home to the dining room, buffet and simple bar. Functioning as a lounge, is a collection of camping chairs around a coffee table that is stocked with informative local literature and guidebooks. Upstairs you'll find decent views over the lake, another buffet counter and another, more substantially furnished lounge. Around the base of the boma is where post-dinner drinks typically happen around a crackling campfire, just beyond the shore of the lake.
You'll find seven, very basic reed and thatch chalets at Rhino Safari Camp, which sleep a maximum of fourteen guests. Rooms are raised up on platforms with views over the lake and are essentially wall-less and open to the outside. They possess ensuite bathrooms, which are located on the ground level and accessed by stairs. Roll-down reed blinds function as curtains and a mosquito net is carefully draped around the beds each night by the extra-attentive housekeeping staff. Bathrooms have flush toilets, open-air showers (with hot water) and a stone washbasin. It's a refreshingly simple way to dwell that provides just enough protection from the elements.
This is a wildlife-meets-water safari that feels more like staying in a home than a commercial lodge. The camp's simplicity only enhances the beauty of the surrounds and proves the genuine hospitality of the people who run it.

Walk with a professional guide, approaching lions and elephant and other iconic game on foot - or simply enjoy a slow, quiet amble observing oft-overlooked flora and fauna. Rhino tracking is a big draw here, and you'll have some of the best opportunities around to catch sight of these critically endangered pachyderms. Boat trips on Lake Kariba are rewarding in vista and birdlife and other game too. Take a fishing rod if you're keen on some competitive angling.
